Week 5: Vector vs Bitmap, JPEG vs JPEG2000

1)Vector graphics can be turned into bitmapped images by rendering; bitmapped images can be turned into vector graphic by automatic/or manual tracing. What use could you make of each of these conversions?

From my research of this topic shown as below:

Vector images are more advantages over bitmap images. Vector images are not based on pixels pattern but used by mathematical formulas to draw lines that can be combined to create an image from geometric shaped such as circle, polygons and etc. Vector also a better images that need a wide colour gradations that been used by the most photographs. Examples of images that well prepared for the vector format such as logos and type.

Meanwhile, bitmaps are dependent resolution, had potential to decreased and increased the sizes without spoiling any degree of image quality. And when the sizes of a bitmap image had been reduced by software’s resizes or resample command, need to removed the pixels. While when the sizes were increased through the same software, the software need to creates new pixels. There examples of bitmap format are GIF, JPG, PNG and TIFF. Popular bitmap editing software are Microsoft Paint and Adobe Photoshop. All scanned images were bitmaps, all images from digital cameras were bitmaps too.

2)Explain in detail how JPEG compression works, and how JPEG2000 compression works in comparison. What are the advantages of these two types of compression

From my opinion and based on my readings shows that jpeg 2000 are more offered both lossless and lossy compression in the same file while jpeg mostly served compression4. Thus when high quality is priorities, jpeg 2000 were proved to be much better compression tools than jpeg. Jpeg 2000 files can also handled up to 200more channels of information as compared to jpeg standard that limited to only for RGB (red, green and blue) data. Jpeg 2000 had ability to displayed images in different resolutions and sizes from the same file. While with jpeg, an image file only can be displayed in one way with certain resolution. As another examples, jpeg 2000 are same goes like cs6 that have a bigger features version, it can’t be read by jpeg or cs if it were saved in big files. Like a small files can read a huge files but the huge files can’t be read by small files.
